Henna 101; A Brief Look At Lawsonia Inermis
Henna has reached a new level of popularity in the United States and the 'western world' We see it on celebrities and teenage girls down the street. But what is it really? In this brief article we'll take a look at some of the cultural and historical roots of the plant; Lawsonia Inermis, more commonly referred to as Henna.
Henna, or Lawsonia inermis, is a bush that produces red dye from its leaves. The leaves are ground and mixed into a paste which is applied to the skin in intricate patterns. The resulting red stain is known as mehndi.
Over 9,000 years old, henna use dates back to the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. It has roots in spring fertility celebrations and was used by warrior goddesses to celebrate victories. Henna is the oldest documented cosmetic and is cooling on the skin. It alleviates heat exhaustion and is a natural sun block.
Henna was used by Egyptian civilizations. Nefertiti and Cleopatra were known to have used henna and traces have been found on mummies. The Prophet Muhammad dyed his beard with henna and his daughter, Fatima, dyed her hands with it.
Mehndi has been used in cultural and religious practices by Christians, Jews, Hindus, and Muslims. Middle Eastern and North African Jewish communities, had a special affinity for Henna due to biblical and Talmudic references. Henna, in the Bible, is Camphire, and is mentioned in the Song of Solomon, as well as in the Talmud. Henna is currently used in over 60 countries including India, Morocco, Africa, South China and Southeast Asia.
Thought to ward of evil, mehndi is applied for celebrations and holidays. It is applied to the hands and feet of Muslim and Hindu brides for marriage. It's a show of wealth, beauty and brings good luck, fertility and love.
Applying henna near the end of a pregnancy is believed to protect and bless the mother and child during the difficulties of labor. The red color and special designs guard against the evil eye and protect from malicious spirits that may be near during delivery.

Question about red, brown and black henna...?
I have read on numerous sites that black henna can contain a chemical called para-phenylenediamine that can cause all sorts of skin problems, but I don't plan to use black henna. Can brown or red henna have it in there? I have a friend who has red henna she bought while she was in Malaysia but it doesn't have an ingredient list, so I'm not sure if it's in there.
Can red or brown henna contain para-phenylenediamine?
Well first, there are no brown or black hennas, all henna is red. So if it's labeled black there's likely no henna in it at all, it's either chemical PPD dye or perhaps indigo powder. Most of the time, a label that says red henna means just pure henna, and brown will mean henna with other plants included to add dark tones. But brown might also mean it has PPD in it too.
If what she has is a dull green powder that smells a little like hay, it's probably pure henna. Take two small samples, mix one with water and one with lemon juice. Stick both dollops on a paper towel and put them in a plastic baggie. After one to several hours at room temp the lemon solution should stain the paper orange. The water sample shouldn't be staining much at all; if it is, it should be fainter than the acidic sample.
PPD releases dye when mixed with water almost immediately. If either sample dyes the paper in minutes, then you shouldn't use the product because it likely contains either PPD or other chemical dyes. If by some chance the powder starts leaking a blue dye instead of black, it's probably you have either fermented indigo, or an indigo and henna mixture instead of pure henna.
The only way to be sure of what you're buying is to trust the seller. Mehandi.com has lab certified pure henna. Other than that, stick to well known brands and become familiar with what pure henna looks, feels, and smells like.
