Christmas Face Painting Stencil Tips
As Christmas approaches, face painters everywhere are preparing to show off to the world their very own special creations. For the amateur painter, however, that first face painting party can be scary. While you gain in confidence painting free hand, a popular option is to use stencils. For any beginner, it’s best to keep things simple. Doing cheek painting or using stencils is an ideal starting point. If you are thinking of trying out stencils, then the following tips may be useful.
YOU WILL NEED:
A craft or an Exacto Knife.
Stencil paint brushes.
A piece of stiff plastic or acetate. Using see-through would be an advantage.
Your stencil design. If you’re artistic, you can draw your own or download one and remember to offer various sizes for each design.
You will need a hard surface to cut the stencil out on; a cutting board would be ideal.
Low-tack Tape.
(1) - Tape down your stencil securely on the edges to the acetate and with your sharp craft knife carefully cut out your stencil along the edges. Use your free hand to help hold the stencil in place.
(2) - Once your stencil is cut out, smooth out any untidy or rough edges as they will affect the finished look of your design.
(3) - Make sure you use the correct painting brush for use with stencils, usually round with short stiff bristles.
(4) - It’s always best to work from the outside in. If you are comfortable using sponges, these work well on stencils, too. Try not to overload either with paint and use quick up and down movements with the brush. This will help prevent paint seeping under the stencil edges. Use the fingers of your free hand to hold down the small parts of the stencil while you apply the paint.
(5) - Patience is a virtue. Remember your finished creation will look best if you do a couple of thin coats. Always make sure the first layer is dry before applying the second.
(7) - As it’s Christmas, you cannot go wrong with some festive stencil designs like a Christmas star, snowflakes (even I remember folding up paper and cutting all different bits out to make snowflake patterns), Christmas trees, Santa face and snowmen.
(8) - Practice, practice and more practice, but, more importantly, it is Christmas so have lots of fun and don’t worry if you make any mistakes. Highlight your designs with some white or shading, add a touch of glitter and you will be amazed how a simple design can suddenly be transformed.

Is it hard to freezer stencil and spray dye a terry cloth towel?
I'm wondering if I can use a freezer paper stencil and iron it on, then spray dye around it, or will the dye seep under because of the fabric?
It will absorb a little ways in, but not as bad as "dip" dying it. Spray it fast and don't hold up the piece because the wet dye will run.
